Wow. You guys are phenomenal. Thank you so much for your encouragement and support on my last post. I would talk more about this, but it’ll just make me cry, haha! So another time. For today we’re going to stick with something light. Just know that you ladies are so precious to me and I cannot thank you enough.
So this dialect vlog thing is going around right now and I figure it’s a great first vlog for this website. I mean, one of the reasons I like seeing people’s vlogs is to find out what they sound like and if their voice matches their face. Well, what better way to do that than a vlog devoted to the way I speak?
So please enjoy! {and excuse the awkward face that youtube decided would be appropriate for this video still, haha}

Okay so tell me… do you pronounce things differently than I do? Is my accent thoroughly southern after 6.5 years in the South? Will you still be my friend even though I say “um” and “like” every five seconds?
Now it’s your turn! If you haven’t done this yet and have been waiting for inspiration for your first vlog… here it is.

You are so cute! My mom was born in the UK, so she and her siblings had British accents until they moved back to the US. My dad has a bit of a Midwestern accent- he says ‘pop’ too
Hehe! This is cute!
My momma has an accent…spanish is her first language and even though she’s lived here in the US for almost twenty years, she still can’t get the handle of the word “gloves”…she usually pronounces it like she would “loaves” of bread…so cute!
This is so fun!! I want to do this..if I could figure out how to upload movies and what not to this computer. Soon though!
That’s so cool that you lived in China! Great video.
haha.. i love watching vlogs and i’m glad you did your first one. i’m not sure though if im ready to do one myself haha..
i say all of them the way you do except data and route. =p
so cute and i LOVE it
go VLOGS!
YOU ARE SO CUTE! I am definitely going to do this too.
Your adorable
No I dont have an accent, but I do say “um” when I get nervous! Either that or I talk REALLY fast!
This is great! Congrats on your first vlog! I have not been that daring yet, one day… It is also a great story that you have to tell about your accent.
How cute! I always say “Ok, so” so that made me smile. I love how you still have the British/English/Chinese thing going on thats so cool!
I grew up in Indiana then we moved to Florida and no one said pop there, it was a major culture shock. I am trying to make a conscious effort not to say y’all anymore
Gosh, I wouldn’t even know how to do a vlog! lol This was great
OMG! I love this! I am such a big fan of learning how people sound…especially when I have looked at their pictures for so long!
Your voice matches you very well! I want to do this now..although I think people would life at my Alabama accent. HA! I might do it tomorrow!!
You should! I’d love to see your vlog!
ummmm that was supposed to say LAUGH.
How fun! I love this vlog!
This is so funny! I say syrup seerup, and i say aunt like ant. i have a very strong midwestern accent-think the movie “Fargo” we over-enunciate the letter r and the letter combo “oa”
when i lived in new jersey i couldn’t get over how they pronounce water. it’s like they’re saying “wooder” LOL!
[1] What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house? toiler papering
[2] What is the bug that when you touch it, it curls into a ball? roly poly

[10] What is the thing you change the TV channel with? remote
can i borrow this for my blog?? this would be so fun to learn more about my readers
Yes yes! Please do it! I’d love to see your vlog!
YOU ARE SO ADORABLE!!! Oh my goodness I really want to do a vlog now! I have no idea how to even go about that, though… you did SUCH a good job!!!
Funny that you now call it Soda Pop… I am from the north (well, not really… but people down here consider Ohio the north lol) and up there we all call it Pop. But since I’ve been living in the south I’ve been surrounded by “soda” lovers so now I call it soda!!! I nevvver thought i’d switch, but I did!
LOVE THIS!
You should SO do this!
Haha so cute! Pretty much all the words from the first list that can be pronounced in two ways, I pronounce them the other way
Although some words from that list surprised me because I didn’t realize there was two ways to pronounce them!
ha what a fun post, and your mandarin is pretty good
i spent early childhood in tx, lived in taiwan from 2nd-7th grade, then moved back to texas…so i am fluent/literate in mandarin, too!
hahaha people in texas just say “coke” for any carbonated drink. doesn’t matter if it’s fanta orange, dr. pepper, or pepsie, it’s dubbed “coke.”
also, i say “car-uh-mel” instead of “care-uh-mel”
Hi Rach! Love this vlog! It’s pretty neat that your accent is derived from so many places! I hear twinges of “Southerness” in some words, which I’m slightly jealous about (I always wanted a Southern accent and would often talk with a fake one when I was young, haha).
I spent the first part of my childhood in California, where they say “soda.” Then I moved to Idaho, and everyone said “pop.” Now I’m confused an use them interchangeably.
I nearly died of shock when I heard you speak Chinese… That’s a difficult language to learn, and you speak it beautifully! (Well, not that I would know the difference, but it sounded beautiful to me!).
Fun vlog!! You’re right, it is fun to match a blog with the face / voice behind it. I just might have to do one soon…
Love accents-and you speak chinese?? whaaaaa?! Awesome!
Ah I wish I was at home so I could watch this! I need to watch all the other ones too and possibly do my own!
Yes! Definitely do your own! I’d love to see it!
I love that you speak Chinese! So cool – and thanks for sharing a bit of your testimony yesterdayish – I don’t think you realize how many people like you (doing well, happy, easy-going) can relate
Best wishes on your speaking engagement!
I love this, you so cute! I say um a lot too and always worry it makes me sound uneducated or like I don’t know what I’m talking about but now that I see you don’t it realize it’s not that big of a deal. Also, love the color of the wall behind you in the video.
I’ll answer the questions:
[1] What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house? tping
[2] What is the bug that when you touch it, it curls into a ball? roly poly
[3] What is the bubbly carbonated drink called? coke
[4] What do you call gym shoes? running shoes (because that’s what i do with them)
[5] What do you say to address a group of people? ya’ll
[6] What do you call the kind of spider that has an oval-shaped body and extremely long legs? daddy longlegs
[7] What do you call your grandparents? grammie, papa, and grandma
[8] What do you call the wheeled contraption in which you carry groceries at the supermarket? cary
[9] What do you call it when rain falls while the sun is shining? ummm I don’t say it but my mom would say, “devils beating his wife” I think that is very Southern/Texan
[10] What is the thing you change the TV channel with? remote
Hahaha those are so funny! I’m from Ohio but now living in Virginia and everyone makes fun of me for saying “Pop” instead of “Soda” Haha
You’re so cute girl! I have a pretty terrible philly accent. I do not say ‘wooder’ in place of water though – that’s a pet peeve of mine and VERY common for Philadelphians ha. I kind of want to do a dialect vlog now!
Definitely do it!! I’d love to hear you. I bet your accent is adorable.
this is so neat; I absolutely love the video AND the awkward still shot face
Hey… you are wearing the earrings you bought. They look fabulous! Love your Chinese and I definitely think you picked up that southern accent again.
I do the mimic thing too, which really sucks when I get someone on the phone that stutters. Oops.
This was so cute! I love your accent and I think you have definitely picked up the southern accent again. I am the same way tho, if I am even in the south for a week on vacation I will come home speaking in a southern accent.
oh my gosh, I SO want to do one of these!
How I talk comes from Philadelphia, England, AND North Carolina. So doing one of these would be pretty cool.
Can I be a huge copycat?
and I CONSTANTLY argue with my southern friends over their “tennis shoes.” It’s SNEAKERS!!!
Of course you can do this too! I definitely didn’t come up with this, I’ve just seen it floating around the blogworld lately.
I can’t wait to see yours!
ahh okay first of all, you are adorable!! I pronounce most things the exact same way that you do and I say “um” and “like” pretty much every 5 seconds too
FREAKING CUTE ACCENT!!! <3 just had to say it
I tried to comment before and it didn’t work so now I’m not even leaving a good comment. sorry to be lame. I really love the vlog
My computer is acting crazy and I can’t see the vlog. I will check it out on my husband’s computer in a little bit when he steps away…I like hearing how people talk too after reading what they say.
AHHHHH you are so cute !!!! I loved this vlog- it was SO fun! Your accents are AMAZING!
Your story is so amazing, moving from Tennessee to China. I don’t think I would ever to a vlog because of my NY accent. It’s awful! Your voice is lovely!
You are gorgeous!! I loved hearing your story – and I love your accent!
I wonder if my Canadian accent would stick out in my vlog??
I love this!!
ok your southern accent is too cute!!!! i say most things the same as you but ohmygosh peepaw?? ahaha that is so cute i loveee it and nice blog girl you seem like such a sweetheart in person
I loved being able to hear how you say things and the reasoning behind your dialect. So interesting and fun! I love seeing bloggers make videos, it makes me feel like I know you even better!
This is a cute video and I love southern accent. I find it very adorable:D Would love to do a vlog and post it on my blog… this is fun:D
I was born in Texas, but have lived all over (including 5 years up around Chicago). I don’t think I have much of an accent anymore. However, I will never let go of saying, “y’all” when talking about a group of people. Some words are just right no matter where you’re from!
Love it! So fun to hear how bloggers talk. I find it’s rarely how I expect, but your voice totally suits you!
This was so neat! You are so cute! I kind of want to do it too, but I have a really bad Southern accent…don’t want people thinking I’m dumb! When did THAT stereotype come about anyway??
Girl, some of my favorite graduate school professors have deep southern accents. Don’t think for a second that people will think that you’re dumb! I’m sure your accent is adorable!
Oh my gosh – I LOVE your accent!!!! It is so adorable, and I’m incredibly impressed that a. you can speak Chinese and b. you have nailed the British accent (I always do it to be silly but people say sometimes I sound Jamaican?!). I don’t think I have an accent….I’ve always wanted one, though.
I love it! So cute
My dad lives in Tennessee, I was come back from my visit and always pick up an accent
One word that has permanetly stuck with me is “shore” for “sure”
This was so cute. I thoroughly enjoyed it! I was born and raised in Tennessee but a few years ago we moved to California and our son said you know when we move there people are going to make fun of our accent. I said I don;t have an accent and he said you think you don’t have an accent because we all talk the same! He was right I really do have an accent. While we lived there every time I opened my mouth someone would say “where are you from” .
