Car Wash! {Restore Memphis}

I love our church family. Not only do we have a big close-knit group of young couples that have become our best friends, but the church as a whole is a beautiful place. In a city full of racial tension, every Sunday morning our church is filled with a blend of skin tones. In fact, that was one of the first things we noticed (and loved!) on the first Sunday we came to visit. And in a city with violent neighborhoods, we have several families from our church who have moved from their comfortable and safe neighborhoods into scary parts of town so they can truly be Jesus and serve among the least of these. Both our preaching pastor’s family and our youth pastor’s family (among others) live in one of these neighborhoods where they are bringing restoration to our broken city. And in a society where complacency is key, I love that our church challenges us to ask hard questions and not be satisfied with the status quo.

This past Sunday, 500 of us came together to worship in a teeshirts, shorts, jeans, sweats, work gloves, hoodies, boots, and flipflops. We sang, we prayed, we took communion, we read the word of God. Then we stepped out the door. Instead of our normal service, this one was shortened to give us the time and opportunity to walk out the doors as a church body and be Jesus to Memphis.

It. Was. Awesome.

missionsHere are some of the things we were involved in all over the city of Memphis: loving on and playing with children, picking up trash all along the roads near our church, writing letters to shut ins and the sick, visiting people in hospitals, serving meals to the hungry, making care packages for college students, making welcome packages for new people who live in the apartments close to our church, praying over the city of Memphis all day, giving out snow cones, offering free oil changes and automotive repair, car wash and detailing and many others that happened without being officially planned.

carwashΒ We were part of the car wash crew! We danced and and jumped and pointed and chanted and had a blast doing it. πŸ™‚ {Ps. notice the “Babtist your car today!” sign… the little girl who wrote it meant for it to say “Baptize your car today!” which is also hilarious already, but the typo made it even better! So LOVE to see children serving and being involved!}

carwash2Christopher and Tony advertising for the car wash!Β Even better was when they were first handed signs and started advertising, they didn’t realize their signs said “We Are Good” and “No Donation” but no mention of the car wash. We died laughing. Hopefully not too many people noticed that before we got them a car wash sign. πŸ˜‰

signsThe kids made nearly all our signs so some of them were pretty hilarious. Here Seth shows off just how good we are (for nonmenbers)… πŸ˜‰ Ps. notice Christopher flexing… he’s actually pointing to the carwash behind him, haha! And this is one of the few times I’m not hopping up and down with my sign in the air. The guy I’m talking to is actually one of our pastors. πŸ™‚ Β {photo from Monika G’s Instagram. All the other photos were from the church’s FB page.}

So yeah, I love our church. πŸ™‚
