A Majestic Sort of Evening

On February 7th in 2008 Christopher and I got engaged! πŸ™‚ So every year around this time we go out and celebrate. Usually in lieu of Valentine’s so we don’t have to deal with the crowds. πŸ˜‰ This year the 7th fell on a Saturday which made it perfect for a celebration sort of day!

We decided that we wanted a steak dinner for this particular night so we checked Urbanspoon for the TOP steakhouses in Memphis and The Majestic Grille was number one. It has been on our “to eat” list forever, but we just hadn’t made it there quite yet. So we decided that THIS would be the night!

majestic movieThe Majestic was originally built a silent movie theater and when it was renovated to become a restaurant, the owners decided to keep the old movie feel. So all throughout dinner movies were playing on the screen.

We arrived at 5:30pm thinking that an early dinner would beat the crowd, but they were booked SOLID until 8pm (the entire upstairs of the restaurant had been booked for a party so seating was more limited than normal). The hostess told us that the bar was first come first serve so if we could find two seats together then we were more than welcome to eat there. We walked along the bar looking for a spot (two seats appeared open, but both had a purse or a jacket in them).

majestic insideInside the Majestic looking at the balcony. Look at that detailing! I love it! Originally built in 1913.

Just as we were deciding to go somewhere else and try again another night, a man who had noticed us looking for seats walked up to us and told us to hold on just a minute and that he would find seats for us. He reappeared a few minutes later and had added seats on to the end of the bar. It wasn’t until later in the evening when he came back to chat with us that we discovered that it was Patrick Reilly himself who had done that for us. Patrick owns the restaurant and I imagine that if anyone can make seats appear out of thin air on a totally booked night, it would be the owner. πŸ˜‰ And oh, are we glad that he made those seats appear.

majestic flatbread pizzaWe started with the pepperoni and sausage flatbread as an appetizer to split. The crust is perfect. Thin and crispy.Β A definite winner.

majestic grilled cheeseThe grilled cheese. Oh my goodness, you guys. Best grilled cheese of my life. I mean, there was BACON. And so much cheesy goodness. And a creole mustard that took it to the next level. I will absolutely be back for this grilled cheese alone. Served with Parmesan fries which were pretty good. Parmesan isn’t my absolute favorite and neither are fries, but Christopher loves fries so we got these for him to try. He enjoyed them!

majestic ribeye steakAnd then… then there was the Ribeye. With Majestic butter. And served with garlic mashed potatoes. It’s like a little taste of heaven. Best steak we’ve had in Memphis. Easy to see why The Majestic is rated number one on Urbanspoon. Absolute perfection. And those garlic mashed potatoes… I could eat a bucket of those. Delectable!

Everything we ate was delicious. The hostess, the bartender, and the owner were all exceedingly kind to us. The ambiance was classy and romantic. We will be back. Hopefully soon. πŸ™‚

Have you been to a theater-turned-restaurant before?

If you are married, do you celebrate the day you got engaged?

Eat anything delicious this weekend?

  1. What a great night!!!! Happy anniversary! Yall look great!

  2. Soooo many things I want to say at once… Ha, ha!
First off, you and Christopher are looking very dapper in that first picture. You are SUCH a gorgeous couple, inside and out!!!
Secondly, I want to eat at that restaurant so badly! LOL! The atmosphere right down to the food sounds amazing!! (And I love that the owner himself helped you to find a seat)! This might be a must-try for when I come down to visit someday! πŸ˜‰

  3. I am DROOLING just looking at this! I’m glad you guys were able to stay and that the OWNER found you seats!

  4. You two look STUNNING! What a great night.

  5. Sounds like a great night! Happy Anniversary!

  6. I don’t know where to start. Old silent movies playing on the big screen through dinner – what a cool atmosphere! The fact that the owner found you seats at the bar – awesome! That grilled cheese and the parmesan fries – I want it for breakfast, right now. The whole night looks and sounds like it was amazing. Happy belated engagement anniversary! Kevin proposed to me on Labor Day so it’s fun that we always have the anniversary off work. Also we can kind of celebrate our engagement anniversary twice because it was September 3, which isn’t always Labor Day proper. πŸ™‚

    • It really was a great atmosphere! I can’t believe it took us that long to actually get there. But it was so good. πŸ™‚

I think it’s so great that you guys always have your engagement anniversary off work! Extra time together is always good. πŸ™‚ And being able to celebrate twice is extra great! My parents got married on Thanksgiving day which was Nov 28th in 1985. So every year they get to celebrate both the 28th and Thanksgiving day. πŸ™‚

  7. uhhh wow!
    talk about awesome service!
    and what a beautiful atmosphere!
I want to go eat there!!

  8. TWO romantic celebrations during the same month?! LUCKY LUCKY!! hehe! – http://www.domesticgeekgirl.com

  9. Eeeee so lovely! You, hubby, dinner, all of the things! Lovely! I also had an AMAZING grilled cheese with bacon when I visited DC last month. One of the best of my life for sure. But then, bacon takes everything to a whole new level. πŸ˜‰

    • Oh my goodness, I KNOW! Bacon really does take everything to the next level! Do you remember where it was in DC? We’re planning a trip there eventually (we both went as kids, but want to go again as adults) and I’m totally for jotting it down now for whenever that trip happens. πŸ™‚

  10. I love that our engagement anniversary is so close to yours! Y’all looked breathtaking and so does that food πŸ˜‰

  11. Girl you look gorgeous and your evening looks so fun!!!! πŸ™‚

  12. What a cool restaurant – I love that they kept the old movie theme! I love that that you celebrate the day of your engagement rather than valentines – so nice that they are so close together! I always forget what day we got engaged (I do know it was July!) so we hardly every celebrate it. Maybe we should – this sounds fun!

  13. Happy engagement-iversary! Sounds like such a perfect celebration…I want to go to that restaurant!! The atmosphere and the food look amazing, and SO cool that the owner himself made seats appear for you πŸ™‚ Also, I love your lipstick in the first picture!

  14. That’s so fun! I’m glad the owner found you seats πŸ™‚ The food sounds delicious. We don’t go out and celebrate the day we got engaged, probably because we got engaged on Dec 26 so we’re usually busy doing Christmas things. But fancy dinners are really fun and special because they don’t happen often for us!

  16. Look at you in that bright red lipstick! You guys look great! And this restaurant looks amazing! I might be tempted to go in and check it out even if the food wasn’t that good, just to take in the architecture and the history. It’s so neat that they keep movies playing on the screen while you eat!
