Destin Favorites Video

Destin has become a bit of a home-away-from-home for us. Christopher grew up going there as a kid and we have now been there together six times. We’ve fallen into quite the groove of how this trip goes. Even getting there has its own traditions. Leaving Memphis after work, Chick Fil A for dinner, Starbucks Reserve Store for a coffee break, and then crashing at my parents’ house late at night (they live 2 hours from Destin so they are a great place to stay when we get in at midnight so we don’t have to mess with late night check ins). Anyway, I wanted to share ALL of our favorites with you guys, but that would be a very, very long blog post. So I decided instead that I was going to film it. Enjoy!

Note: When I say “the best” this or that, I mean in our opinions based on trying the top rated places so far. Clearly we haven’t tried every single place in Destin (though believe me – we’re working on it!). 🙂

Was your favorite part of the video the high five on the beach? Because it’s one of mine! Seeing my expression makes me laugh every time I watch it! 😉

Have you been to Destin? Do we share any favorites? And of course I’m always open to recommendations for trying new places if you have any!

Today we celebrate!

Hello friends! As many of you have seen from Instagram, we are currently in Destin celebrating our 8th anniversary so I’m going to keep this short and sweet. Just I wanted to pop in and say hello real quick. 🙂

Destin has been beautiful. As always. This place holds so many precious (and sometimes terrifying, ha!) memories for us. This is our sixth trip here together and it really feels like a home away from home for us. But more on all of that in a later post. For today I want to leave you with a shortened version of our wedding video. Because while we’ve been celebrating for the past five days with this trip, today is the official anniversary day. 🙂

Have a beautiful day friends!

Destin 2016: Things I want to Remember

We just got back from Destin. And it was lovely. So lovely. We went with our friends Brodie & Lyndal just like we did this time last year and we had a wonderful time!

Things I want to remember:

– All the delicious seafood!
– Long walks on the beach (I’m not kidding about “long” – Christopher and I walked 30,000+ steps on both Saturday & Sunday!)
– How incredible Mimmo’s Italian Restaurant was (review & pictures here)!
– Listening to comedians on the car ride (Brian Regan always makes me laugh)
– Coloring (adult coloring books for the win!)
– Communion on the balcony with Brodie & Lyndal
– Soaking up the sun
– McGuires – oh, how we love McGuires (previously blogged about here – we have eaten here every year since 2012 with the exception of 2013 when we went to Italy and didn’t travel much else that year. They make a GREAT steak!)
– The perfect weather. It was 80 degrees, full sun, and breezy. Perfect beach weather. I didn’t break a sweat once!

It was a great sort of getaway. 🙂

Things I’ll remember from 2015

For my last post of 2015 I wanted to look back at some of the things that I know I’ll remember about this year.

princess party

A huge one for 2015 was that this was the year “my girls” graduated from high school. I’ve been mentoring them since they were in 7th grade so it’s hard to believe they are all off in college now. A favorite memory with them this year was our final princess party. It was precious. 🙂

recovery

We’ve had a lot of health stuff/surgeries/sicknesses/etc going on this year. Among them was Christopher’s ACL surgery in January and me getting food poisoning in the Dominican Republic. As hard as some of this has been and as much as I might like to forget those parts of 2015, I’m thankful for the way we so tenderly care for and support each other. And we have both been overwhelmed by the kindness and support of friends and family this year.

A new thing for 2015 was the Our 30 Days thing we did. A break we took from “real life” to just be together. It.was.awesome. Since then we’ve learned to be much better about carving out time for us which I have loved!

My photography business has continued to grow and I have continued to be amazed by the growth. I’ll remember 2015 as the year that I let myself get way overbooked (especially Oct-Dec). I came out of busy season with my head still attached so that’s good news, but I want to have a better plan in place for next year. I’m working on that. 😉 But all in all, this business has been awesome and I am unbelievably grateful for my clients, mentors, and encouragers. 🙂

us at grand canyon6

Of course, like most years, 2015 was full of traveling for us. My favorite trips were to Vegas, the Grand Canyon, Destin (even though we had a terrifying experience with a rip current this year, we still love Destin!), and NYC. And of course the Bahamas, but that is part of the next one…

us in nassau

Celebrating Christopher’s 30th birthday with a trip to Harry Potter World (that post is still coming!) and taking a cruise to the Bahamas! Awesome-sauce! Definitely a solid way to end 2015! 🙂

I’m not sure what all 2016 will bring our way, but I have a feeling it’s going to be pretty awesome! 🙂

2014 Mini Recap

2014 has been quite a year for us. From mid-March until October we were hardly home on a weekend because we were traveling so much. It was wonderful, but also exhausting at the end of it all. But we are so glad we went on those trips. And we definitely look forward to more travel in 2015 (though maybe with a weekend or two at home thrown in between trips, haha!). Instead of recapping the whole year, I’ve decided to share the five biggest things I think we will remember about this year. So enjoy this short walk down the 2014 memory lane!

travelingLike I mentioned earlier, I think we will definitely remember all the traveling that happened in 2014. This is just a small sampling of the places we went this year. Friend trips, family trips, couple trips, going to meet new babies trips, traveling to be with our niece in the hospital trips, etc etc. We were busy this year!

DestinOur Destin trip for our 6 year anniversary in particular stands out for a couple of reasons. First of all, we nearly died. Okay, not really, but we could have if we hadn’t woken up. It definitely made us hyper aware of all we have to be grateful for. This trip also stands out because we were in desperate need of a breather by the time our anniversary rolled around. The summer had just been SO busy. And the beach is the perfect place to just stop and breathe. No agendas or running around. Just lazin’ about, playing in the water, and taking time to be romantic. It was the perfect refresher for us.

CRUISEWe celebrated 10 years of being together (from the day we first started dating) by going on a cruise to the Bahamas. It was absolutely wonderful. We actually had just received some sad news during this time and being out on the ocean was the perfect place for us. There is definitely something healing about the beach and ocean and time together. I was so grateful for this trip.

photographyMy photography business exploded this year. It’s actually been so hard to keep up with the growth that I’ve had to refer several people to other photographers because I am juggling so much. But it has been amazing to see how this hobby of mine that I was so passionate about has become a viable business. 🙂

TV showAnd of course, 2014 was the year that we made our reality TV debut! 😉 We were chosen for an episode of Fix it & Finish It and we got to be mic’d up celebs for a day. We are still so thankful to Antonio Sabato Jr and the crew for all they did for us!

It has been a whirlwind year. But a good one on the whole of it. We find ourselves entering 2015 excited to see what comes our way. 🙂

So. Much. Good. Food.

Christopher grew up going to Destin on vacation every summer and this past trip was our third time to go together so obviously we love it. While we were there we started talking about how cool it would be if we had a place that we took our kids back to every summer just because Christopher has so many great memories there. Destin is pretty high on that list right now, haha! Of course, while we’re both darker complected, there’s no guarantee what our kiddos will look like. Of our four parents, three of them are very fair skinned. So yeah, when I birth a blue-eyed, red-headed, fair skinned kid I’m not sure what we’re going to do. I guess coat them with sunscreen, put them in a wet suit and giant hat, and put them under an umbrella. 😉 But I’m getting ahead of myself…

rach and christopher

Since we’ve been to Destin so often we have a pretty good idea of the best places to eat. This year instead of trying a bunch of new places we decided to stick with our favorites. 🙂

fisherman's wharf2Christopher grew up eating at Fisherman’s Wharf every summer and we’ve eaten here every time we’ve visited together as well. Their food is SO delicious! I love their mahi mahi and fish tacos and their loaded baked potatoes and their mac & cheese. It’s all so good! This is definitely our favorite spot for seafood in Destin!

fat clemenza'sFat Clemenza’s is our favorite Italian spot in Destin. Their garlic knots are ah-mazing! And their bolognese is one of my favorites! I’d say it’s tied with Maggiano’s as my favorite bolognese I’ve eaten in the States which is saying a lot because you guys know how much I love bolognese! So yummy! And it’s so much food that I can take half of it back to the condo to eat later! Love having it twice this past weekend! 😀 Christopher tried the seafood pasta for the first time this time around and it was pretty good. But to us it wasn’t worth the price tag. Next time Christopher will just get the tried and true pizza (which I’ve blogged about before here).

fujiWe did stop at one new place. Mostly for lunches we just ate snacks on the beach, but one day I was really craving sushi so we drove to the closest spot to get some sushi to go. We were expecting just mediocre because we didn’t do any research on this place, but it was DELICIOUS! I even got some noodles and a little sweet & sour chicken which were also great. We will definitely be back to Fuji’s the next time we’re in Destin!

mcguires2We hit up McGuires twice while we were in Destin because we love it so much! We had Tyina as our server the first night and she was literally the nicest server we’ve ever had. Ever. She was just so genuinely kind and sweet. For those of you who have never been to McGuires, it’s such a fun spot. There is over a million dollars in dollar bills stapled to the walls and ceilings all over the restaurant. And the mens & women’s restrooms can be a little confusing if you don’t read carefully (look at the pics above). It’s such a fun spot, though!

mcguiresTheir bread is like a taste of heaven. I can’t even describe how good it is. And just completely covered in honey butter. You guys, so good. Their potato skins were to-die-for. Definitely the best ones I’ve ever had! They are like an entire meal in of themselves! Their nachos were ENORMOUS (this photo doesn’t do them justice). We barely even made it through half of them. I loved the nachos, but they weren’t Christopher’s favorite (he didn’t like the mess they made because they were piled so high). And their Senate Bean Soup is still just 18 cents because that’s what they first charged for it when the restaurant opened 1977. It’s super tasty. I would order every single one of these items again!

steaks from mcguiresBoth nights that we were there we split a steak. The first night we ordered their highest rated, priciest prime steak. And the second night we ordered the least expensive “choice” steak. Christopher enjoyed them both and to tell you the truth… I actually really liked the “choice” (aka “cheaper”) steak way more than the pricey one! I’m not sure what that says about my taste quality, haha! But really all their food is SO good!

rachChristopher snapped this shot of me watching the beginning of the sunset from our balcony one night before we headed to dinner. 🙂

Did you grow up going to the same vacation spots?
Do you prefer to return to favorite restaurants to to try new places?
